Bespoke services at a reasonable price
Simply put, Atelier 4 exists because art wasn't made to move, it was meant to hang on a wall or rest on a pedestal. When you are challenged to find solutions to make the improbable practical, you contact the experts, you call on Atelier 4.
ATELIER 4 HISTORY
Like art, Atelier4’s story is shaped by people deeply invested in culture. In fact, its founders were so invested in the arts that Atelier4 began as a day job that would allow them more time to make art and music. Andrew Faintych worked as a museum tech and got his best friend Jonathan Schwartz into delivering art from New York to Los Angeles. After a few years honing their skills in fine art logistics, Schwartz caught the entrepreneurial bug and recruited Faintych to start Atelier 4 in 1989. They focused on growing the contemporary art market in New York’s SoHo district, and had so much success doing so that they soon targeted bigger fish—museums and collectors. With that commitment to quality came sacrifice; there went the art studio and soon after the band broke up.
Known for his affable charm, Schwartz soon became the face of the company, while Faintych oversaw operations. The name, Atelier4, derives from that same personal history and bespoke services; it riffs on the legendary art school Ateliers ‘63, (coincidentally Schwartz’s birthday) and Roger Shattuck’s famous “The Banquet Years”, which examines the careers of artists Alfred Jarry, Henri Rousseau, Erik Satie, and Guillaume Apollinaire whose influence is at the foundation of modern art. Plus, Schwartz thought it sounded pretentious, which held the appeal of poking fun of himself and the industry.
By growing the team, upgrading equipment and methodology, and keeping current with technology Atelier4 became a trusted vendor to the most exacting of clients. All our vehicles come with carefully calibrated climate-controls, integrated alarm systems and GPS locators as well as a mandatory minimum of two professional art handlers.
After 20 years of operation, we opened our second location in Florida. Miami is the gateway to Latin America as well as home to one of the largest concentrations of contemporary art fairs in North America. A few years later, we acquired a small, quality art handling firm in Los Angeles and in 2018, we opened our newest branch, in Charlotte, North Carolina, filling a void in services for museums in the region.
With 30 years in operation, our personalized approach to fine art logistics management is a little old school, but our clients like it that way. Our state-of-the-art equipment and hands on approach means we in-house over outsource, and make sure the valued art you trust us receives the care it deserves.
ATELIER 4 LOCATIONS
NEW YORK - Established in 1989 35-00 47th Avenue Long Island City NY 11101 T. +1.718.433.3500
A4 has a reputation for the safe handling of precious objects in transit. We have taken this knowledge and outfitted a secure and modern 65,000-square-foot facility to provide the optimal environment for staging of exhibitions and long-term storage. Controlled access to the facility, closed-circuit video surveillance and central-station alarm systems safeguard our flagship building. A state-of-the-art and environmentally responsible chiller room provides the cooling plant for our HVAC system, augmenting humidity control. Private vaults and shared climate control storage rooms are available for individual works or entire collections.
MIAMI - Established in 2009 2170 NW 87th Avenue Doral, FL 33172 T. +1.305.685.9797
A4 is proud to announce its recent move to a 21,000-square-foot climate-controlled storage and operations facility with a dedicated interior dock located close to Miami International Airport. The concrete tilt-up construction boasts a 22-foot ceiling, a newly built custom crate fabrication shop, and a dedicated viewing room. Our Miami-based staff offer climate-regulated trucking, installation, import/export services, and supervision at the airport. We are in our 10th year in Florida, the United States’ gateway to Central and South America.
LOS ANGELES - Established in 2011 1636 North Indiana St. Los Angeles, CA 90063 T. +1.323.785.5550
Our LA outpost is in a 22,000 square foot fireproof concrete tilt-up structure with 20-foot ceilings and four dock positions, including an indoor, drive-in bay. This facility features a crate shop, packing room, and climate control storage. This unit is part of a secure and gated warehouse complex near USC Medical Center at the junction of I-5 and I-10. A4 LA’s management team are veterans of museum exhibition logistics. We offer international freight forwarding and customs brokerage in addition to our usual non-outsourced, asset-based services.
CHARLOTTE - Established in 2017 1960 Cross Beam Drive Charlotte, NC 28217 T. +1.980.237.6521
At the crossroads of the Southeast region, fast-growing Charlotte boasts a perhaps unexpected range of museums and galleries; within a four-hour-long drive many additional art institutions have had to operate without a local, established fine art logistics firm to serve them. That’s why we are in the Queen City, taking advantage of an international airport offering daily flights to many European capitals and an interstate highway system linking the region with our domestic shuttle service, our newest location offers 26,000 square feet of climate control storage, crate fabrication, and art handling services.
ATELIER 4 TEAM
Reputation is everything to us, but brand recognition, impressive trucks, and facilities are nothing without the people that make us shine. Meet the New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Charlotte teams and the administration and management staff that bring us all together.
